Vienna International Airport (VIE), also known as Flughafen Wien-Schwechat, serves as an important gateway to Central and Eastern Europe and is the primary hub for Austrian Airlines.

Knowing about the airport’s modern facilities and variety of lounges can make your time at this airport easier and more comfortable. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of all airport lounges at VIE, detailing their locations, amenities, and all available access methods.

Navigating Vienna International Airport's Terminals

Getting to know the layout of VIE makes it much easier to find the right lounge.

The airport consists of one main building with several check-in areas (Terminals 1, 1A and 3) and is divided into Schengen and Non-Schengen zones based on your flight's destination. Note that there is no formal “Terminal 2” at this airport - it is a ‘connector’ only.

Schengen vs Non-Schengen Flights

Within Terminals 1 and 3, there are separate sections for Schengen and Non-Schengen departures.

Schengen flights depart to destinations within Europe's Schengen Area, including Germany, France, Italy, and Greece. Non-Schengen flights are to everywhere else, such as the UK and long-haul destinations.

If your flight is to a Schengen destination, you cannot access any lounges in the Non-Schengen area of the airport.

Your departure gate's letter (e.g. F07 vs. G07) determines whether you are in the Schengen or Non-Schengen zone. Always check your terminal and gate area before selecting a lounge, as movement between zones is restricted after passing through passport control.

Terminal & Gate Pier Overview

Terminal 1

Terminal 1 is the check-in area for various airlines, including many Oneworld and SkyTeam carriers.

  • Gate Areas in Terminal 1:

    • Gates B and C (Pier West): Schengen flights

    • Gates D (Pier West): Non-Schengen flights

Terminal 1A

Terminal 1A is a separate check-in facility located directly opposite Terminal 1. This is primarily used by leisure and low-cost airlines like easyJet and SunExpress, as well as some legacy carriers like China Airlines.

Flights that use Terminal 1A for check-in depart from gates in the main Terminal 1 (B, C or D gates). There are no boarding gates in Terminal 1A.

Terminal 3

Terminal 3 is used by Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, and most other Star Alliance members (except Turkish Airlines), as well as Emirates, Qatar Airways, Korean Air, China Eastern, and various other carriers.

  • Gate Areas in Terminal 3:

    • Gates F (Level 1, Pier East): Schengen flights

    • Gates G (Level 3, Pier East): Non-Schengen flights

General Tips for Travelers at Vienna Airport

Finally, here are some tips for making the most of your time at Vienna Airport:

  • Allow Sufficient Connection Time: If connecting between Schengen and Non-Schengen flights, factor in sufficient time for passport control, which can be busy during peak hours.

  • Check Your Gate Zone First: The most critical tip for VIE. Your lounge access is determined by whether your gate is in the Schengen (Gates B, C, F) or Non-Schengen (Gates D, G) area.

  • City Check-In: Passengers flying on selected airlines, including Austrian, Eurowings, Lufthansa, and Norwegian, can conveniently check-in and drop their luggage at Wien Mitte train station in central Vienna. This service is available between 24 hours and 75 minutes before departure, in conjunction with a City Airport Train (CAT) ticket.

City Check-In counters at Wien Mitte station
You can drop your luggage up to 24 hours before departure at the City Check-In counters in Wien Mitte station, before catching the non-stop City Airport Train to the airport.
  • Shuttle Service: A free shuttle bus operates between the C/D gates and the F/G gates, making it easier to use a lounge in a different pier. Buses generally come every 10 minutes and the trip takes around 2 minutes, but always allow extra time.

  • Sleeping Pods: Vienna Airport offers Zzzleepandgo sleeping cabins:

    • Location: Terminal 3, in the landside area (before security and passport control) on Level 2.

    • Features: Pods include a bed, Wi-Fi, power/USB ports, and a multimedia system.

    • Cost: €9 (US$11) per hour, with overnight rates starting from €63 (US$73). Booking is available online or directly at the terminal.

Summing Up

Vienna International Airport provides an excellent and well-organised lounge network catering to a wide variety of travelers. By understanding the critical difference between the Schengen and Non-Schengen zones, you can easily identify the best lounge for your journey.

Whether you have access through a premium ticket, airline status, a lounge membership like Priority Pass, or simply wish to pay for entry, VIE has a comfortable space and convenient amenities waiting for you.
